I am very impressed by the site. In particular, I have found the interviews with various Japanese figures such as Ambassador Matsuoka, General Araki, and General Honjo of great interest (Other texts are also fascinating but I am personally interested in these three men). I will recommend it to my colleagues.

What a fine site, which I just happened upon. It's nice to see that Mr. Jones "got it right" in his reporting from Stalin's Russia. First-hand accounts such as this one are a rare find. One hopes that such classic reporting might find its way to a wider audience.

David Bergamini has no idea what Emperor Hirohito was thinking during the 1930s. His "Japan's Imperial Conspiracy" was very poorly received by scholarly reviewers in the "The Journal of East Asian Studies" when it was first published in the 1970s. In point of fact, numerous translation mistakes and misleading interpretations were cited. That people, such as Iris Chang, continue to treat this work as scholarly is extremely questionable. I must admit that I have yet to read "A Manchukuo Incident" however from what I see here it seems that Gareth Jones was killed by Chinese bandits and yet as soon as Mr. Bergamini's name creeps into the text there is the distinct impression that Mr. Jones died as the result of a Japanese conspiracy. While I grant that that is certainly not beyond the realm of the imagination I think the authors of this Web site need to reconsider their use of Bergamini as a source for historical context.

[Author's reply to above comment]

Dear Michael Tropp,

Thank you for your comment and interest which is much appreciated. The book Gareth Jones: A Manchukuo Incident is an investigation into my uncle's murder on August 12th, 1935,  while in the hands of Chinese bandits. The salient facts are the incursion by the Japanese into Manchuria (1931) and the demilitarisation of Chahar following the Chin-Doihara agreement of June 27th, 1935.  Another, that is probably unknown to historians, is the massing of Japanese troops and vehicles in the town of Dolonor (Chahar Province) (July 26/27th 1935).   I ask the question why?  This needs further investigation but I have no access to Japanese archive records.

My chapter 'Historical Background' is for those who have no knowledge of pre-WW II  Far Eastern history. The book has nothing to do with David Bergamini and you will notice that I have prefixed / begun the (single) sentence in question with "According to".  David Bergamini was extremely hurt by the reception his massive book  was given, particularly by Americans.  Hirohito has been desanctified (exonerated?) by some authors since 1970, but I myself have an open mind. Thank you again for your comments.  May I suggest that you read Gareth Jones' articles on Russia, Germany, Ireland, Wales and America 1930-1935. My book itself is a picture of the tumultuous history in the Far East as recorded by Gareth Jones in his diaries and letters home during his travels there during 1935.

Sincerely Margaret Colley

Thanks for your website, I found both articles on Dowlais/Merthyr Tydfil and the Ukraine very interesting. As a member of the RAF I came with a friend a couple of times (in 1947),had a "blind date" with a very pretty girl from Brynseion(?) Stand did the Sunday "monkey parade" Where being in uniform I received (for the only time in my life!) wolf-whistles-from girls. I was shocked when I visited a miner's cottage at the lack of any space/privacy. Also by co-incidence after 1945 we had several (anti-Russian) ex-Ukrainians in our town, initially allowed to stay after the war only as members of an anti -bomb squad! I think only one survives, some returned "home" in the last few years. A friend of mine has/had been helping to look after their interests.

29 March 2003

Through misty eyes, I read Gareth's commentaries about the holocaust perpetrated by Stalin on the Ukrainian people in 1932-3.

He stood by his principles in a time when others were covering their eyes. It is indeed that, through enlightened minds, such as that of Gareth, that the truth prevails, no matter how much and how long the falsehoods of coniving jackals try to cover it up.

For that, you, as his descendants, have a friend in me.

Please feel free to call upon me should the need arise. I will do what I can.

I came across this website while searching for material on Superstition in Soviet Russia which is the topic of my PhD research. The story of Gareth Jones fascinates and moves me enormously - what an extraordinarily interesting and talented man. My own life has been much entwined with Russia; I studied Russian at university and was a journalist in Moscow for 5 years in the late 80s and early 90s. It is wonderful now to find such personal and immediate material about the Soviet Union in the early decades of its development. I have enjoyed the website enormously, and look forward to receiving my copy of the book. In admiration, Emma Gray

Thank you for this review of events during the 30's. This history would make a provoking movie, and especialy now, since Duranty's award was not revoked! I ask, why has the Ukrainian history been allowed til now, to be buried by the Hitler atrocities? Where is the memorial for the millions of Ukrainians who were starved to death? I thank you and all those who requested this revocation for reminding the world!

Thank you so much for your site.

My Mother, the second youngest of five girls in her family, was sent to live in Kiev many miles from her home by her Ukrainian land owning father in 1932, when she was 12 years old. Today (2004) she lives in Sydney and well remembers the 'famine' brought about by the mass murderers in Moscow.

One must surely question the reasons behind the Western Medias' denial and 75 year long suppression of the Ukrainian holocaust.

I think perhaps some holocausts are more equal than others

This is a wonderful website. It is pity that less than 5% of Ukrainian population have access to the Internet. Many people still do not know the whole truth of what was happening during the Soviet times and especially during the famous artificial famines. However, I do not think that this information could be easily obtained from the foreign bookshelves (as I know, not in the UK, neither in Germany). Perhaps, the Ukrainians should open a fund, the money from which would be spent on the publishing of books on Ukrainian Holodomor. I am very grateful for this website and pleased that so many people have already visited it.

Why is it that truth only gets exposed 75 years after the events that are reported? This web site is a profound 21st century contribution to history and I feel privileged to have uncovered it. Credit the National Review article by Andrew Stuttaford. E W "Bill" Housh, Muscatine,Iowa, USA

The web site is really great, and I look forward to reading your book. I have spent some time reading the information on the site, and the dismaying continuity of a collusive news media in re despotic regimes and atrocities is so disturbing. Thanks

I was able to find you after reading an article in National Review US. After trying to buy the book for some time on Amazon US I was delighted to discover you have a US distributor and I have just faxed in my order. I honour your quest and look forward to reading the book. I was sick that once again Walter Duranty's Pulitzer Prize was not taken away. Thank you for all your efforts. Joy Hayward
