Letter 6 via
Siberia received March 29 1935
The Bunka
Apartments,
Tokyo
My Dearest All,
This is going to be an exceedingly interesting
week, because I am going to have interviews with four of the outstanding
personalities in Japanese life. Matsuoka who took Japan out of the League of
Nations at Geneva . General Araki, the firebrand who was Minister of War
,General Hayashi who is now Minister of War and Admiral Osumi who is the
Minister of the Navy. Those last are the men who play such a big part in
modern Japan. I have had dozens of talks and been reading ???? thoroughly.
The last letter I had was Jan. 25 .1 have several February letters from
England, all of course Via Siberia .1 wonder if there will be more
M.G.articles of mine when your letter comes.
The American Club ,Tokyo
Monday
Evening
March 4
,1935
It was splendid to get your letter
(Jan 31 Febl) today and the M.G.articles which were slightly cut by the
subeditor. 1 have been reading Punch of Feb 13 which came via Siberia .It is
splendid to have signed articles in the M.G. and it augurs well for the
future
I am still having a most busy time, although so
far! have only written one article .There is so much background to be
learned .1 have been reading old cuttings and articles in order to make
myself familiar with the terms and the history.
A week Friday March 15 I sail for the
Philippines via Shanghai and Hong Kong and on April 6 I shall be at
Singapore ( Dollar Line
," to be called for). Then Batavia; Singapore; Bangkok. I have decided to go
from Siam through French Indo-China seeing the runs of Angkor-to Hanoi to
Hong Kong .It will be new material .1 can’t think of many British
journalists who have written about Indo-China.
Friday March 8.
The Siberian mail leaves tonight .Dioloch yn
fawr lawn am eich llythyron o cherefror y 3 a 4.Rwyf yn falch lawn bod Cymro
wedi curo v Alban.
Today I had a talk with Baron Shidehara who was
Foreign Minister of Japan up to the end of 1931, he was in office when the
Manchurian Incident occurred
.
Yesterday I had a most interesting interview
with M. Matsuoka ,who you will remember was Japan’s representative at the
League when she left the League .H e is returning to the spirit of old Japan
,I may send the interview to the
M.G,
I have only had time to write one article (.I.N.S.)
so far .There are so many talks and dinners. Saint David’s day went well. Mr
Daviess’ (the consul) house was decorated with leeks and there was another
Tokyo Jones there from Machynilith. Afterwards I had dinner with the
Coxes(of reuters).
Everybody thinks that the journey that! am
preparing is excellently planned and should be most valuable.
The thousand pounds will be quite wonderful
won’t it? But Auntie deserves it for her long exiles in the Siberia of
Wales.
Tomorrow I am going to tramp in the mountains
with Gordon Jorgensen. ,He is excellent company and can discuss philosophy
and politics and national characteristics .We shall probably stay in a
Japanese Inn .1 look forward to the hot spring baths after each day of
tramping.
A week today I sail for the Philippines via
Shanghai and Singapore .A year ago! was in Ireland interviewing De Valera
.Don’t you think I have an interesting life. I hope to interview General
Araki soon. He is revered by the young officers and is of course a national
figure.
On Tuesday night some of the leading Japanese
industrialists will assemble at a dinner to talk to me on Japanese trade!
Dioloch yn fawr iawn am lythyr Auntie Winnie.
Gobeithio bydd Auntie Teg yn parhau wella a bydd Miss Madeline yn well.
I hope that Gwyneth’s cold soon was better.
Since I left home (nearly 5 months ago) I
haven’t had the slightest touch of anything -not even a cold.
Please don’t let lanto get too fat .1 hope that
he is not being over-fed..
I am still glad to have signed articles in the
M.G. It is a great thing.
I like Japan immensely .The people are
courteous and kind . They seem to grin and laugh without stopping .Everybody
giggles !It is most clean here -spotless .People seem to spend their time
having baths. When I go to visit Matsuoka or Shidehara I always take my
shoes off at the threshold.
I’ve just ordered 2 thin suit s for the
tropical climate; also some shirts made to measure .(pure silk at 8/4
artificial at 4/2 to measure).
On Wednesday night I entertained Mr and Mrs Cox
to dinner here at the America Club. It is difficult to realise that I am in
Asia ,because everything is so modern .Nearly all the food
I have is European (I like Japanese food; the
fish lobster, prawns are lovely ).The place I stay in is quite European .In
my room I might be anywhere London, Berlin or Vienna-except at night I hear
the watchman in the street beating two sticks which sound hollow -ping-ping
-to show that all is well.(like the Mastersinger of N) .He comes carrying a
Chinese lantern.
And now to the post office .This letter has
a long journey before it.
Letters on the Trans-Siberian Railway. in
Russia.
It will be fine to be in the mountains .The
trees Letters on the Trans-Siberian Railway are not opened in Russia and
canyons and waterfalls are magnificent .1 think that walking in the
mountains is what I like doing best in this world.

My dearest All,
Just returned from tramping in the Ezu
Peninsula -
an excellent time ,beautiful
scenery and great weather except for a thunderstorm .Gordon Jorgensen and I
walked along the coast .through Japanese fishing villages where the whole
population seems to rush out and stare at us .They thought we were a great
joke ,with our funny eyes .We passed a number of small shento shrines to
various local gods.
Tuesday 4.45. March 12.
Here I am sitting in the American Club having
tea .The Siberian mail leaves soon. So I shall have to hurry over this
