EVERTON COMBINATION V. OSWESTRY DISTRICT.

 

A match between these teams was played on the Cricket Field, Oswestry on Thursday. The weather was grand for out-door sports, and the object for which the match had been arranged—the benefit of the Cottage Hospital—caused a large crowd to assemble, and they were treated to a very fair exposition of the Association code. Mr. Wright of Halston was announced to kick oft at half-past four, and about five minutes after that time the ball was set in motion, the home team defending the Weston goal, and Everton having a glaring sun in their faces. The visiting forwards at once made for the home goal, Townsend cleared, and Pinnel getting the ball, worked it well down, but he was pulled up before he got dangerous. Smith and Murray next showed up, and a shot from the foot of the latter was headed away by Taylor. Another shot from the came wing followed a second or two later, and was well met by Townsend, who returned the ball to midfield, A case of hands against Oswestry followed soon afterwards~ but the free kick did not avail Everton anything, the ball being sent behind. From the goal kick the globe was well met by Jones, who returned it to the home end, and Pinnel, in-heading in, put it wide. Play was then taken to midfield, and Murray got possession, but his shot. was safely negotiated by Townsend. A corner for Everton followed, but nothing resulted. Coyle next accidentally fouled the ball, and Irons the free kick the home forwards made for the Everton end, a shot at goal going wide of the mark. From the goal kick the ball travelled to Oswestry half where Smith was showing up prominently. Grainger dispossessed him and another fruitless corner followed for Everton. A sharp attack on the home goal followed, Townsend clearing just in the nick of me. Play was then taken to the centre of the ground, and then another attempt on the home goal was futile. The Oswestry forwards then took the play well into the Everton quarters, Elliott returning the ball, which was sent over the touchline. Townsend next pulled up McLlaren; the home back passed the ball to Grainger, who in turn passed to James, but the latter was dispossessed by Collins, and Pinnel got in; the Everton centre forward passed to Smith, the latter of whom stint over the cross-bat. A capital opening was next offered Elliott, and the capture of the home stronghold seemed imminent; he, however, missed, sending the ball wide of the mark. A throw in for Everton followed, Pinnel headed in, and Taylor cleared, Townsend, a short time afterwards, getting away a hot shot by Elliott. Ellis next had to deal with a hotshot from the same wing, but he was quite equal to the occasion. The Everton right wing next got possession, and Murray put in a nice centre which Pinnel sent straight for goal, Ellis got it away, and the play was taken to the Everton end. A grand shot was put in by James, Parry headed it away, and E.Jones getting the ball, shot wide of the mark. From the goal kick the ball, was taken to the home end, and Murray put in a difficult stall which Ellis saved in a marvellous manner. Time Everton end was again the scene of play, and Holloway had a nice chance off a pass by Owen he, however, shot wide. Pinnel got the ball from the goal kick, and was making tracks for the home goal, when be was pulled up by Sabine. Taylor next got the ball off McLaren, and than a hot scrimmage in the home goal was witnessed. The position was maintained, and from a good pass by J. Evans the ball was sent well into the Everton goal. Collins cleared, and the play was again taken to the home end. Townsend returned, and a good run by E. Jones followed, the latter sent in a nice shot, which Parry in clearing put over the Everton goal line, a corner for Oswestry following. James took the kick, and sent the ball well in front the goal, Owen sending in a beautiful shot, which Rennie cleared. The home goal was again threatened, a miskick by Townsend letting in Murray. Disaster was averted, and the Everton goal threatened. James had a good opening but he (tallied too long with the ball, and a capital chance was lost. Townsend soon afterwards cleared a shut from Pinnel, and F. Jones getting the ball sent in a beauty, which lauded in the net, the first goal being accredited to the home team, the large crowd cheering lustily. half-time arrived soon afterwards, and the teams changed ends with the score standing at one to none favour of Oswestry.

On resuming James got the ball, and sent in a shot which Rennie caught and cleared. The Everton forwards Omen began to press; Townsend returned a shot by Pinnel, and Murray handling relieved the pressure from the free kick the ball was taken to the visitors’ quarters, W Owen had a nice opening, his final effort, however, topped the cross bar. Pinnel and Elliott next showed up prominently. Grainger took the ball from the latter, and a second or two later Holloway put in wide of the Everton uprights. The home goal again besieged and. Ellis in saving a shot by Mclaren give a fruitless corner .The pressure on the home goal was renewed. Pinnel looked dangerous, but Grainger dispossessed him, and then the Everton left wing, Mclaren and Elliott, got the ball, a long shot from the latter going wide. A long pass by J Evans let in Holloway, who with a nice shot, compelled Rennie to use his hands, and then the scene of play was again changed, Elliott shooting wide when he seemed to have a capital chance. Taylor got away a shot by Elliott, Collin returned the ball, and Townsend was next called upon to clear a shot by Smith. Coyle next got time ball from Grainger, and sent in a long shot at the Oswestry goal. Taylor cleared, and the home left wing showed up. E. Jones made a nice pass to James, the latter of whom transferred the ball to Owen, when the home centre forward had a nice opening. He, however, failed to take advantage of it by shooting wide of the mark. The play was taken to the home end from the goal kick, and when danger scented imminent Grainger rushed up and cleared. One of the home men next handled time ball, and the visitors were awarded a free kick. Parry took it, and sent the ball well in goal. It was re­turned, and Collins getting it, sent in a long shot, which Ellis ran out to save. He missed to get at time ball, which landed in the net, and time score was made equal. On the ball being kicked off from the centre, McLaren tried a shot which went behind. Play in the home half followed for a short time, and after a futile shot by Murray, Owen sent the leather to Holloway, who sent in a slow shot, which Rennie got away. Smith next looked dangerous, Townsend pulled him up, and Taylor cleared. A free kick for Everton in the centre of the ground followed, but this availed them nothing, the ball being sent behind time goal line. E. Jones then put in a good run, he sent the ball nicely across Owen tried to put between the uprights, but Parry tackled him, and cleared. Smith had a capital opening, but he missed the mark by several yards. Elliott tried to capture time home position; his shot, however, missed the mark. A throw in from the corner fell to Everton. A nice pass by Pinnel let in Smith, who shot right into goal. Ellis cleared, and the ball was afterwards worked over the touchline. Pinnel again got possession, and after some nice passing between the Everton forwards he scored the second goal for his side. From time kiek off the ball was again taken to the home end. Pinnel passed to Smith, and the latter, with a somewhat easy shot, scot-ed the third goal for Everton. Holloway got the ball from the centre kick, but was pulled up by Parry, and then Rennie safely dealt with a slow ground shot by James. The home team were now making strenuous efforts to score, and the Everton defence was tried on two or three occasions, but it could always be relied upon. The home goal was threatened on several oc­casions, but no more points were scored, amid when the referee signalled tune Everton were left winners of a capital game by three goal to one.
