Praise for Head
who taught Tolerance

Major Edgar Jones
*****
MANY
times in private Barnett
Janner,
the local boy who
made
good, thought of the debt
owed
his headmaster. Last Saturday generations
after the debt
was
incurred, he publicly thanked
the
headmaster. Dr. Edgar Jones
now aged
80, formerly of Barry
County
School.
Speaking on “Toleration and the
Jew In
the World To-day" at a
meeting
of the Cardiff and
District
Council of Christians and
Jews.
Mr. Janner now 61, solicitor
and
Member of Parliament for
Leicester for eight years, said,
“The
influence of that great
Christian, Dr. Jones upon myself
and my
fellow students was of such a nature that there is none
of us who to-day does not look
back upon the years of that influence
with
considerable
pleasure and who would not
willingly go back to that man for
guidance in any matter which
might
be perturbing them,
"He is a
great Welshman and
a man
who understands what tolerance
and really means.
He imparted to the students an
understanding, which enabled us
to
live in harmony with each
other.
"I am
therefore happy to have
this
opportunity of saying in public
what I
have often said in private
—how
grateful I am to him.
Similar outlook
How
important it would be if
men and
women of goodwill could follow a similar example
wherever they may be. I
lived
in Cardiff for many years. I
enjoyed
the privilege of being
educated here at the University
College
and I have seen Welshmen
all over the world.
"I have
felt there is a considerable
amount of understanding between
the Welsh people and the Jewish
people because there
happens to be an approach by both
which
is of a similar nature, first
to the Bible and the land of the
Bible;
secondly, to matters pertaining to the general outlook of
men and
women of goodwill"
The Rev.
A. H Nicholas, chairman
of the executive council of the Cardiff und District Council
of Christians and Jews, presided
I at the
meeting which took plate
at the
Reardon Smith Lecture
Theatre. Brigadier General E proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Janner.
Turner of the
Salvation Army, and seconded by
Mr.
David Shane, president of the Jewish ex-Service Men's Association
(Cardiff Branch).
