Private Letters from Walter Duranty
to H. R. Knickerbocker
From Knickerbocker’s Papers at
the Butler Library,
Columbia University, New York.
The following transcripts were researched by myself and Russ Chelak in November 2004 at Columbia University, and they represent in my opinion, the most salient pieces of correspondence from Walter Duranty to H. R. Knickerbocker within Knickerbocker's papers. E.& O. E. - Nigel Colley April 1, 1927 …”Today’s the fourth day I’ve been virtually on the wagon (only one and a half normal whiskies in three small doses, no Madeiras)...” Jan 23, 1929 My dear Knick, Here as you may know the “alarms” & excursions are for the moment subsided. I saw Trotsky off the night of my return and for once took steps to beat the censor. And did without much rub. They were peeved [/pained?] with Scheffer, but more in sorrow than in anger. WD June 11, 1930 My dear Knick, I have little doubt that within a month or two, our friends here will be making contracts for sales of what in quite large quantities at prices below the dollar, and what will that do to the markets of Chicago & Canada don’t need much guessing. After all, the farmer is still an important figure in American Economy
& if cereals break badly it will have a worse effect on the stock markets… [Telegram from Duranty to Knickerbocker] 20 / 05 / 31 Terribly Glad about Pulitzer Prize because always felt badly about the other business [Presumably as Duranty took full credit and the award for a literary prize on a jointly written novel] & this much better -Stop - Expect arrive Berlin 28. Moscow June 23, 1933 The “famine” is mostly bunk as I told you, except maybe in Kazakstan and the Alti, where they wouldn’t let you go. If you did want a visa, I think you’ll get it alrigh [sic], but the FO [Foreign Office] in particular is rather crockety about reporters travelling these days. …Yours Walter Duranty June 28, 1933 Dear Knick, …Hope you won’t find my various requests in a letter I sent you yesterday through German bags, too tiresome Best Regards WD
