Mr. Arthur Bovino,

Office of the Public Editor

The New York Times,

229 West 43d Street,

New York, NY 10036.

20 December 2003

Dear Mr. Bovino,

RE: GARETH JONES

Thank you for your email (dated: 18 December 2003).

Unfortunately, your reply did not address any of the issues raised in Dr. Margaret Siriol Colley s letter (dated: 9 December 2003), relating to the vilification of our relative, Mr. Gareth Jones, in an infamous article published by your newspaper on 31 March 1933.

It is evident that you have not only failed to have given due consideration to the contents of my mother's letter, but one has to seriously doubt whether you have even shown her the courtesy of reading it.

If you had done so, you would certainly have replied to her directly (as I previously requested) in a totally different fashion, and probably more in accordance with the independence for which your newly-created department should be seen to act, rather than as yet another purveyor of the known opinions of your newspaper's publisher.

Nevertheless, I would be obliged if you would formally reply to mother's letter now, and this time from the just standpoint of a true Ombudsman - and, preferably, in the public domain, via your weekly column in the New York Times. Conversely, I should like to discover why Gareth Jones, who was villainously denigrated in your paper for his pursuit of honest reporting, does not warrant your department's deserved support in this matter of grievance.

Finally, I look forward to Mr Okrent's personal attention to our correspondence, as I am sure he would agree that your previous valediction of "Cheers" is totally inappropriate for your company's response to its possible culpability in facilitating the famine-genocide of nearly 10 million Ukrainian citizens.

Yours sincerely.

Nigel Linsan Colley
