 Queues of 7,000 stand. 

In the fine buildings no heating. And they sat in coats and gloves and could not work.  Increased power of G.P.U. Women with fur coats –probably wives of G.P.U.  Few men ruling Kharkoff. Queues for bread.  Erika and I walked along - about a hundred ragged pale people.  Militia men came out of shop, whose windows had been battered and were covered with wood and said:

“There is no bread and there will be no bread today.” Shouts angry peasants also there. “ But citizens there is no bread

              “How long here?” I asked man. “Two days.” They would not go away, but remained. Sometimes a cart might come up with bread, waiting with a forlorn hope.

          Streets in a terrible condition, houses rotten, ice thawing, wet, dirty.  Saw homeless boys.  They are increasing.  The influence of the film ………   has been a bad influence and many boys of good families have run away.

                 We examined the houses; the stones were terrible – crumbled when I touched.  Many constructions were abandoned on account of financial difficulties. Rottenly built

       

 bad condition. They do not belong to anyone person so they do not trouble to look after. Lack of leather for harness, etc.  Rub side of horse, blood, scraggy, diseased.

 Houses, streets badly looked after.

            People evade responsibility. Afraid to sign, so it is difficult to get things done.

             Queues of 7,000 stand.  They begin to queue at 3-4 o’clock in afternoon to get bread the next morning at 7.  It is freezing – many degrees of frost.

                There was a big trial in Kiev about 2 years ago where leaders were arrested and sentenced.

                Very many dismissals. Thousands of unemployed in Kharkoff. Their bread card is taken away, often given no passport.

                                                                                     Coat.eg, Gogol, One street we went through had an evil reputation. Gangs would steal the coat and watch etc. Dark Street Lack of electricity light. The electric trams had to stop in Dneiperstroy because there was no current, Electricity failure
